A Survey of Child Psychiatry Contributed by Contemporary British Authorities

This book has been edited by Dr. Gordon on behall of the Child Guidance Conncil introduced into Great Britain by the trustees of the Commonwealth Fund of America, ten years ago. At the present moment there are over fifty clinics in active work that such a thing as child guidance is now accepted by most persons concerned with judicial, educational ?r social work throughout the country. No less than twenty-one authors have contributed to the book and the reader is presented with a reasonably coherent survey. In his own contribution to the book, Dr. Gordon quite rightly deplores the attitude of the average doctor towards psychiatry. Far too fevV doctors realize the importance of trying to correlate anatomy, physiology and physical pathology with psychiatry. As Dr. Gordon observes, one of the most important fields of medical research is psychosomatic disease, that is, the production by deranged emotional states of symptoms and syndromes regarded hithert?

We examine what is currently meant by this term and suggest a refinement of definition to reflect the ideals and contemporary practice of medicine.
